What is Gastric Bypass?

Gastric bypass surgery is a type of bariatric surgery that limits food intake by reducing food absorption.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is considered the "gold standard" of weight-loss surgery. It is the most commonly performed bariatric procedure worldwide.

During gastric bypass surgery, your doctor makes changes to your stomach and small intestine to change how they absorb and digest food. creating a small stomach pouch, dividing the upper part of the stomach from the rest, and the lower end of the divided small intestine is lifted up and connected to the newly created small stomach pouch.

Eventually, the upper part of the divided small intestine is connected to the lower small intestine so that stomach acids and digestive enzymes from the bypassed stomach and earlier part of the small intestine will eventually mix with the food.

With this method, almost 80% of the stomach is reduced, which is why patients get a feeling of fullness with much smaller portions. At the same time the absorption of nutrients is limited. Gastric bypass patients achieve weight loss because food passes directly from the formed small stomach into the small intestine, skipping part of digestion, absorbing fewer nutrients and calories. When ingested food passes directly into the ileum, which is the final section of the small intestine, a variety of hormones are secreted which cause the pancreatic gland to produce more insulin. Shortly after surgery, high blood glucose levels are reduced to normal, and diabetes medications or insulin are stopped completely or partially, even before weight loss begins.

After 6 months it is expected to lose half of the excess weight and within 1 year about 70% of the excess weight.

Gastric sleeve surgery has fewer complications than gastric bypass surgery

How is sleeve gastrectomy performed?

Sleeve gastrectomy is performed laparoscopically (closed surgery).
